OR-ASTA Solo Competition 2026

The purpose of the event is to present an opportunity for advanced string

students to perform and receive recognition for their hard work. 

We encourage you and your students to plan now to participate!

OR-ASTA SOLO COMPETITION GUIDELINES

Open to students of Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp, Classical Guitar.

The participant must reside or study in Oregon or southern Washington.

 

DATES

  • September 10: Registration opens

  • October 1: Preliminary round videos are due by 11:59 pm

  • October 13: Finalists will be notified via email

  • Sunday, November 1: Live Final Round with 3 judges at George Fox University

 

CASH PRIZES (subject to change)

  • Senior division: 1st Place $1,000, 2nd Place $600, 3rd Place $400

  • Junior division: 1st Place $600, 2nd Place $400, 3rd Place $200

  • First place winners are not eligible to compete again in the same division.

FEES

  • $75 Non-refundable application fee for students of ASTA Members or ASTA Student Members

  • $100 fee for non-members (to get the member rate, Join ASTA today!)

  • *A limited number of need-based fee waivers are available - please write oregonasta@gmail.com by Sept. 25 for consideration. 

 

AGE DIVISIONS

  • Age Requirements       

    • Junior Division: 15 and under, on or before 11/1/2026                                                                       

    • Senior Division: Age 16-22 on or before 11/1/2026

REPERTOIRE

  • Repertoire is to be selected from the traditional classical literature.

    • A complete movement or complete set of smaller movements is required (14 minute time limit for finals). 

    • Selection can be from any time period, Baroque to Contemporary: concertos, encore pieces, unaccompanied pieces, etc.

  • Memorization and accompaniment are not required for preliminary video, but strongly encouraged.

  • Finalists are expected to play from memory, with accompaniment if their piece includes it. Traditional sonata movements may be performed using music.

  • ​Time limit: There is no time limit for preliminary video, but the final competition limit will be about 14 minutes. During the finals, judges may ask students to stop and jump ahead if necessary for time constraints. Please cut lengthy tutti sections.

  • The same piece must be used in the preliminary round and the final round.

REGISTRATION DETAILS: Register and send preliminary video by Oct. 1, 2026 at 11:59 pm at orasta.org

This is a TWO STEP process. You will need to submit the following:

  • STEP ONE: REGISTER and PAY your registration fee (see link above, below photo)

    • Pay via credit card

    • $75 for ASTA Members and their students 

    • $100 for non-members

    • Fees are non-refundable

    • You can register early and wait to submit video.

  • STEP TWO: SUBMIT PERFORMANCE VIDEO AND INFORMATION BY October 1st at 11:59 PM

    • After you register online, you will receive an email with a Google form link. Complete the form with the following:

      • ASTA member's name must be provided for member rate (student or teacher membership)

      • Recording of your preliminary round performance

        • Unlisted YouTube recording link to your full performance (the entire piece or entire movement)

        • Pre-recorded accompaniments are acceptable for the preliminary round.

        • Record in a space that is free of background noise and distracting items.

        • Position yourself about 10 feet from the recording device with the f-holes somewhat facing the camera so that adjudicators can see the entire student, instrument, and bow stroke in the camera frame (horizontal or vertical orientation).

        • Dress to look professional. "Smart casual" dress would be appropriate.

    • Repertoire Title, Composer, opus/catalog number, movement number, tempo marking, and duration of performance (minutes)
      • Contact information for performer, parent/guardian, and accompanist (if applicable)

      • This Google form MUST be completed by Oct. 1st at 11:59 pm.

      • Email astaoregon@gmail.com if you do not receive the Google form immediately following your registration.

FINALISTS - PERFORMANCE on NOVEMBER 1st

  • Finalists in each division will be invited to perform in the final round of competition on Sunday, November 1, 2026​.​

    • This is a live public performance and will be held in Bauman Auditorium at George Fox University in Newberg.

    • Finalists will be notified via email on or before October 13.

    • We encourage use of our recommended accompanists to minimize scheduling conflicts. Details will be forthcoming.

    • If a finalist cannot perform at the competition, an alternate will be selected.​

  • A panel of distinguished musicians will serve as judges for the final round of the competition.
    • Performers will need to provide 3 (three) judge's copies for finals, with measure numbers. Photocopies of works in the public domain from imslp.org are acceptable.

    • Finalists will compete against other finalists in their division regardless of instrument.

    • Awards will be announced at the conclusion of each division.

    • Judge's decisions are final.

    • The teacher listed on the registration is the teacher of record for the competition cycle. In the event the entrant changes teachers during the competition cycle, both teachers, past and present, can be listed as the teachers of record. Any exception is at the sole discretion of the OR-ASTA board of directors.
